In Memoriam - Our Dear Friend, Ricvictorian

I am very saddened to announce that our dear friend and fellow Screaming Skulls alumni, Ricvictorian, has passed away.  This announcement has been delayed due to my own medical concerns of which I will write about in a separate entry.

Rick was born on Nov. 23, 1957 and passed away on or about Dec. 16, 2013 at the age of 56.  He loved life, his friends, his cat Tony and the Buffalo Bills.  He was a bachelor all his life, but always on the lookout for that one certain femme fatale that would change his world.  Alas, he did not live long enough to find her.

Rick was the consummate collector of all artifacts Victorian.  He was fascinated by memento mori in particular and had an extensive collection of hair wreaths and jewellery.  His poison bottle collection was superlative.  Hearse postcards and funeral paraphernalia decked his apartment walls.  Strange taxidermied animals lurked in dark corners.  Religious artifacts and uranium glass intermingled on shelves.  Rare books and opium pipes lay waiting for a visitor to discover them.  His abode was a museum and an art collection and he loved to talk about all of it to anyone who showed an interest in it.

I met Ricky about fifteen years ago where we both worked.  We found we liked a lot of the same things and we had a lot of fun sharing stories and trips to various museums and places of historical interest.  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him... and sometimes when I see someone walking along a street that reminds me of him, I get goose bumps up and down my arms.  Wherever you are, my friend, I wish you well.

Victorian Taxidermy Museum Display

This is my latest Arcane project.
I cannot afford a real Victorian museum display from 1800's Britain, as they are rare and can auction for hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
Instead I decided to craft one myself.

The total cost was less than $120!
Created with:
- Dead tree bark / branch: Scavenged from local park.
- Old brass tray from India: Garage Sale
- Roll of artificial moss: Walmart.
- Taxidermy bats from Java, Indonesia: Online Auction

- Reproduction Victorian tiffany terrarium: Online Auction

Rick's Poison Bottle Display

Well, after living here for almost two years I have finally gotten around to building a unit upon which I can display my poison/narcotic bottle collection! Most of the bottles date back to the Victorian era and all are over 100 years old. One could purchase any of these notorious concoctions over the counter at any Apothecary store! Regards ... Ricvictorian. P.S. There is an open invitation to all Screaming Skulls members to visit my humble abode inspired by the ADDAMS FAMILY anytime!

Victoria: Queen Of Goth

This is an old 'significant dates of Queen Victoria's life' coin display of mine upon which I have recently 'revamped'.

Postcards to the Future

In the year 2000, everyone would have their own personal dirigible.

Check out these neat postcards from the German chocolate company Hildebrand, circa 1900. They depict predictions of the future - the year 2000 to be exact. Some are bang-on, while others are quite laughable. All in all, a delightful collection.

Skull & Crossbones Mourning Ring Dated 1819

Pictured is a very rare Victorian 'Memento Mori' mourning ring I have noticed selling on-line. It has woven hair of the deceased within the crystal dome along with two silver Skull & Crossbones. Around the crystal gallery are deep blue Sapphires. The shank is inlaid with black enamel. See the inscribing inside the ring! I have two such rings but nowhere near as detailed as this one. Probably the sweetest Mourning Ring I have ever seen. Unfortunately I dont have $2,400 bucks as Mourning Curios are my favorite passion.
